Week 9… Prime and Composite & Factoring Whole numbers

Things to look out for this week:

  • Homework- Prime and Composite Numbers (USE YOUR MATH BOOK OF SECRETS!)
  • Estimation Quiz- Grade will be on grade sheet by the end of the week!

We will also be introducing factoring whole numbers including Greatest Common Factor.

  • Greatest Common Factor or GCF is the largest factor that two numbers have in common.

Week 7

YAYYY! We made it through the first six weeks! For the past two weeks we have been working hard with multiplication and division! Both division and multiplication are a VERY important part of our 5th grade year in math. Things you should be looking out for this week:

  • Common Assessment #2 on Tuesday- solving word problems including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. (COUNTS AS TWO GRADES)
  • This week the homework will be over division. Due Thursday!
  • Study your 8’s facts! Quiz on Friday 🙂
  • Report cards come home this week

Week 5- WORD problems!

Problems, problems, problems… we all have them but the fifth grade STAAR is FULL of them! Every problem that your child will have on STAAR is going to be a word problem where they have to decipher the strategy they will need to use to answer the problem successfully.

This week we will continue working on addition and subtraction word problems but we will also start looking at multiplication and division word problems.

 

Important things this week:

  • Homework- addition and subtraction word problems… DUE THURSDAY!
  • PRACTICE YOUR 6’s! Make flash card or try multiplication.com/game for some extra practice.
  • Weekly grade- addition and subtraction word problems (Friday)

Week 4- Common Assesment 1

Hope that all of you had a great weekend and I can wait to see your smiling faces in the morning!! This week we will have our first common assessment. A common assessment is a test over 3-4 TEKS that we have covered in a three week span. This is a great way for me to see where our student are in math and what we may need to re-cover to make sure that we are successful!!

IMPORTANT things this week:

  • Homework due on Thursday (given on Monday)
  • Common Assessment on Tuesday- covering place value of whole numbers and decimals. Also, Relating decimals to fractions.
  • 4’s quiz on Friday… STUDY, STUDY, STUDY!!!!!
  • TEK being covered this week- 5.3A- using addition and subtraction to solve word problems (whole numbers and decimals).

Ready for week 3…

Week 3 will be another eventful and important week! Things to know for this week are:

  • Monday we will have a quiz on comparing and ordering decimals through the thousandths place.
  • Tuesday we will be taking a Math Screening Assessment. This is very important because it will allow us to know what strengths and gaps our students may have in math. Get a good nights sleep and eat a good breakfast. We know you will do your best!
  • Tuesday night we also have open house in the cafeteria for fifth grade parents. We will cover STAAR, school rules, student expectations, and many other things. Hope to see you there!
  • HOMEWORK IS DUE THURSDAY. It will be given out on Monday.
  • We will have a  have a quiz on our 3’s on Friday.

This week we will be studying: 5.2D- using models to relate decimals to fractions that name tenths, hundredths, and thousandths. Week 2- Assignments and Due Dates

During the week of 9/2/2013 – 9/6/2013 we have many things going on in math!! Each week I am going to try and update my blog and let each of you know if there will be a test, quiz, or HOMEWORK that may be due during the week! 🙂 I will also add a link that allows parents to update themselves on what TEK we are studding in class.

What to study and be aware of this week:

  • We will start practicing our 5’s multiplication facts on Tuesday, we will have a timed (1 min.) quiz on Friday.
  • Homework will be passed out on Tuesday also, it will be due Thursday at the beginning of class. (over place value of whole numbers)
  • TEK- 5.1B: Place value of decimal numbers through 1000ths place…. read, write, compare, and order.

1st Day Reflection!

Today was a GREAT first day to start the school year!! WAY TO GO 5th GRADE (you did awesome today)!!! Remember that your student information sheet is due tomorrow!! It is very important that we have this. Also, don’t forget your sentimental object… we would love to learn more about you! 🙂
